Where to shop for Mexican and Latin American food in Houston
Houston’s oldest farmers market, known for its Mexican and Latin American produce and vast 18-acre footprint, got a makeover in recent years that includes a new buildout for the stall vendors inside the covered, open-air market. While some longtime Houstonians chafe at the market’s newer, shinier look, its large selection of fresh and dried goods from more than 30 vendors remains impressive. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are on offer at most stalls, along with a variety of dried chiles, herbs, nuts and seeds. For those who prefer to grow their own versions of hoja santa or tepin chile, specialty stores sell the whole plant. Bringing cash is advised, lest you want to pay a $3 fee at the ATM.
